BODY FAT ANALYSERS
Why measure body fat?
Body fat scales give a more detailed picture of your body composition than simple weighing scales. They let you know if your body weight is made up of lean muscle or of fat. They allow you to understand whether your diet or sports routine is leading to a loss of water or if you are actually burning fat? (High levels of body fat are a contributing cause of many serious illnesses, including heart-disease, diabetes, and certain cancers.)
How measure body water?
The 2 main reasons for keeping track of your body water levels are:
1) To find out if you are sufficiently "hydrated" – your body needs a certain percentage of water to function properly (heat regulation, bringing nutrients to cells, cushioning vital organs, etc) – see instructions for more info.
2) To differentiate loss of water from loss of fat while dieting.
How does body fat/body water measurement work?
We use a medically proven technology where sensors on the scale’s platform send a harmless, low-frequency signal through the body and then measure the resistance or impedance to this signal. By knowing the relative differences in resistance of lean and fatty tissue, and by using a complex formula to reference this against clinical studies the percentage of fat and water in the body can be calculated (fat mass contains less water than lean body mass and therefore resists or impedes the electronic current more).
When should I measure my body fat/body water?
We recommend always using the same scales in the same conditions, once or twice a week. Measure yourself in the morning, preferably naked, when you are rested, not dehydrated and you have been to the bathroom.
How should I judge my results?
Body fat and Body water results are indicated as a percentage of total body weight. A results evaluation bar on indicates where the user’s body fat level is situated compared to the medically recommended values (A reasonable range of percentage body fat for the adult male is between 14 and 26%; that for the adult female is between 20 and 33%.) More details on how to judge your body fat and water results can be found in your instruction manual.
Should I use the athlete mode? What is athlete mode?
In certain cases, the method of body fat measurement that we use (BIA method) can overestimate body fat in adult, elite athletes. This is due to physiological differences, such as muscle density. If you are over 18, have been consistently training at least 3 times a week for at least 2 hours each time for a long period in a sport which involves a sustained cardio-vascular effort, then use the athlete mode for optimum accuracy.
The weight displayed is wrong/ different to weight measured by my doctor
Every weighing scale is calibrated differently and there can be small differences between the results on 2 different products. However, if these variations are under 2kg, then the product is not defective. The important thing is always to weigh oneself on the same scales, in the same conditions, once or twice a week, in order to track long-term changes.
The weight displayed varies
The more precise a weighing scale is, the more sensitive it is. You must always place your scales on a hard and flat surface. During the measurement, try to stay as still as possible. It is perfectly normal to have differences up to 500g between two measurements – this can be explained simply by standing differently on the product. Again, the important thing is to measure long-term variations and not the difference between two measurements.
The body fat/body water result varies a lot
As for weight measurement, body fat or body water results can vary without the product being defective. In fact the scale is performing a very complex calculation based on several variables–if any of these changes, then the results can differ:
- A common reason for variation in body fat is variation in body water levels. These can vary hugely depending on the time of day, on whether you have been to the bathroom and at different stages throughout the menstrual cycle.
- If there is a variation in body weight (such as wearing more or less clothing) this can affect the results of body fat/water measurement.
- Even standing on the scale differently can cause minor variations.
Remember: we are estimating body fat and body water levels so that you can track the changes over the long-term. Also, our scales show a body fat/water results as a percentage of total weight – it is therefore possible to lose weight while increasing body fat percentage (losing water or muscle).
I get a weight measurement but I don't get any body fat measurement or body water measurement?
When you have input height, age and sex there is ‘BEEP’. You must step on the scale, in bare feet, WITHIN 10 SECONDS after hearing this. Do not get off the scale until all the results are displayed. (If you save your personal data in the product’s memory, you’ll hear a second ‘BEEP’ when completed – here also, you must get on the scale WITHIN 10 SECONDS).
I have a pacemaker – can I use the product?
You cannot use a body fat product – as a general rule you should avoid all sources of electronic interference.
I’m pregnant – can I use the product?
We do not recommend that you use this product. The results will be highly falsified because pregnancy changes the water levels in your body (we measure body water in measuring body fat). If you have used the product, there is no need to worry but avoid using it again until after the birth. You can however use the weight-only feature of your product by stepping directly onto the platform.
I have a birth control "coil" – can I use the product?
If your coil contains copper, then it’s possible that the result will be slightly falsified because the copper will effect the measurement. However, there is absolutely NO RISK to the effectiveness of the contraceptive or to your health.

My scale doesn't display anything?
If the product is new, you must connect a battery. Some of our scales are supplied with lithium batteries (one or two depending on the model) which should be inserted into the battery housing underneath the scale. In certain products they will already be inserted and you simply need to pull out the tab protruding from the battery housing. Always make sure that the + sign is visible once you have inserted the batteries.Other models use alkaline batteries which are not supplied. These must be inserted into the battery housing at the back of the scale. See instruction manual for further details.
Where do I find lithium batteries?
You can find lithium batteries in most large retailers or in specialist camera shops or pharmacies. Our lithium products use battery type CR2032.
My scale used to work perfectly and now it measures wrong?
Have you checked the battery? Could the scale have fallen or been hit? Has it ever had more than it's maximum capacity on it? Has any water got inside it? These may all be reasons for a defect developing.
How do I change from kg to Stones or pounds?
There should be a small switch underneath the scale. This can be used to switch from grams (kg) to pounds or stones.

What happens if I do not replace the cartridge on time?
The cartridge will continue to filter but will decreasing effectiveness.
THERMOMETERS
Why use a digital thermometer?
Body temperature is an essential indicator of a person's health. Monitoring changes in body temperature is one of the best ways of identifying an illness or infection. Traditionally, mercury thermometers were used for this but these have been banned in many countries because of the health risk associated with mercury. This lead to the development of faster, more comfortable and more accurate products - digital thermometers.
What is an Infra-Red thermometer and how does it work?
Your body heat can be measured by special sensors designed to pick up the infra-red radiation emitted by your body. An infra-red thermometer contains one of these sensors as well as an electronic system to convert this information into temperature. The great advantage of these thermometers is that they allow you to take an extremely accurate measurement with optimal comfort. The temperature is taken in only 1-2 seconds and there is no need to undress or wake up a sick child.
What's the most accurate part of the body to measure temperature from?
Body temperature varies depending on which part of the body it is measured from. That is why you shouldn't compare the results of measurements taken orally, rectally, under the arm, in the ear or from the forehead.
How can I judge the results? What is a normal temperature?
No matter what type of thermometer you are using, we recommend that you take your temperature (or your child's) when you are perfectly healthy. This temperature can now be used as a reference to compare with measurements taken when you or your child are ill. Is the temperature abnormally high or low? In case of doubt, don't hesitate to contact your doctor.
The temperature measured varies a lot
Slight variations in the temperature measured are perfectly normal. Body temperature varies from one person to the next, depending on age and on the time of day the measurement was taken.
FOOT SPAS
For how long should I use my massager?
You should not use any Terraillon massage appliance for more than 20 minutes at a time. This is enough time to enjoy the full benefits of the massage.
What is the advantage of the Infrared function?
Infrared light has been used for years by professional physiotherapists. It is of a very low frequency and it therefore penetrates deeply into the muscle, relieving aches that normal massage cannot reach.
How should I use the Infrared function?
Place your foot on top of the Infrared lamp and leave it there for a few minutes.
How should I use the Aromatherapy oils?
The oils are concentrated and therefore only a few drops are needed. Drop them directly into the water or into the aroma-oil well/dispenser (depending on the model).
Where can I get more Aromatherapy oils?
You can use any standard "Essential"oils to benefit from the relaxation of aromatherapy with your Terraillon foot-spa or aqua-jet.
Under what conditions should I not use this product?
You should not use a Terraillon massager if you have any open wounds or sores or if you have varicose veins. People with pacemakers should first consult their doctor before using.
My product has developed a fault?

BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORS
Why measure blood pressure?
Your blood pressure tells you what pressure there is on the walls of your veins and arteries. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a leading cause of cardio-vascular illness and arterial haemorrhages. Low blood pressure (hypotension) is also a cause for concern as it implies that your heart is not pumping with sufficient power to feed your body with oxygen correctly.
What do the results mean?
Terraillon Blood Pressure Monitors give 3 pieces of vital information in a fast and medically proven way to allow you to monitor you health: Systolic blood pressure (your maximum blood pressure), Diastolic blood pressure (your minimum blood pressure) and your heart-rate.
What unit is my blood pressure measured in?
Your blood pressure is displayed in mmHg (millimetres of mercury), the international standard for blood pressure measurement and your heart-rate is displayed in beats per minute.
When should I measure my blood pressure?
Your blood pressure varies throughout the day so you should always measure at the same times - whether it is several times each day or several times in a week. Your doctor will advise what is most suitable for you.
How should I use my wrist blood pressure monitor?
Make sure to insert the batteries and then attach the product to your left-wrist just like a wristwatch (remember to attach it just below the protruding bone in your wrist). Now place your left palm across your body and onto your right shoulder. Now the display should be facing out and the product should be at "Heart Level". This ensures accuracy. Press Start/Stop and stay still, without talking until the measurement finishes.
How do I use my upper arm blood pressure monitor?
Make sure to insert the batteries and then attach the arm-band to your left upper arm. Make sure that the arrow on the band is facing the inside of your elbow. Leave the display part of the monitor on a table and leave your left arm relaxed by your side. Press Start/Stop and stay still, without talking until the measurement finishes.
My blood pressure reading is too high/too low? What should I do?
If you are using the product correctly, you should get a very accurate result. According to the World Health Organisation, systolic blood pressure of over 140mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure of over 90mmHg is considered to high. In either of these cases, you should see your physician.
My blood pressure reading is different to my doctors?
This is quite normal because blood pressure varies throughout the day. Doctors will often recommend measuring blood pressure at home purely because the stress of visiting the doctor can increase blood pressure. In fact, Terraillon Blood Pressure Monitors are used by in hospitals around the world.
My blood pressure reading is never the same twice?
This is normal due to the fluctuations in blood pressure throughout the day. Make sure to leave at least five minutes between measurements.
My arm hurts when I use the product?
Although it is normal to feel pressure on your wrist or arm during measurement, you should not feel pain. You can stop the measurement at any time by pressing the Start/Stop button.
